If you like wearing hats but don't like the frizzy, matted or uneven hair that follows this video is for you. This video and article shares some tips on how to avoid hat hair without abandoning hats and other accessories.

Choosing the Right Hat

Find a hat that fits your head. You can be fitted for a hat if you don't know your size. Choose a hat made from quality, light materials; for summer time, straw hats are a great choice because they let your hair breathe and in the winter cotton-blend hats work well. Don't choose wool hats as they tend to stress and damage hair, especially hair that has been chemically treated.

Prevent Hat Hair When Possible

Keep your hair dry. If you wear a hat with damp hair, your hair will get frizzy. A ponytail or a knot is a good choice for long hair. For short hair, rake your hair back. You can re-shape short hair as needed when removing the hat. You can also use a scarf to protect your hair underneath the hat.

Reshaping Hat Hair

If you do end up with hat head, the single most important thing to remember is do NOT brush your hair. Instead take a small amount of gel or anti-frizz pomade and run it through your hair with your fingers to re-style your hair. Your fingers add air where a brush will just push things down. If you have static on your hair, use a clean dryer sheet to take away the static cling.
